BANGKOK , Sept. 22 (Xinhua) -- A police colonel was questioned on Thursday for being suspected to have helped Thailand's former premier Yingluck Shinawatra flee the country in the face of a suspended court verdict last month, police said on Friday.

The unidentified police colonel was brought to the National Police headquarters for questioning by Deputy Police Commissioner General Pol. Gen. Srivara Ransibrahmanakul and a few other police generals on Thursday, the police said.

Meanwhile , two other police officers have also been suspected of involving in Yingluck's escape. One is currently acting as police inspector and the other as police warrant officer, according to the police attached to the National Police headquarters.

The police colonel allegedly drove Yingluck from her house in Yothin Pattana area of Bangkok to Sa Kaeo province on the Thai border with Cambodia on Aug. 23. Yingluck was said to have fled the country with the help of several unknown persons, including those police officers.

A privately-owned sedan allegedly used by the police colonel to carry Yingluck all the way from Bangkok to Sa Kaeo has been thoroughly checked for DNAs and other evidence which might possibly unveil her mysterious departure , the police said.

A search warrant might be issued by court for police investigators to check Yingluck's premises in connection with the getaway car, the police said.

No charges have been filed against the three unidentified police officers for the time being, pending further investigation since they were suspected to have secretly helped Yingluck's escape.

The Supreme Court's verdict was due to be delivered to the former premier on Aug. 25 , following a criminal lawsuit filed against her pertaining to a scandalous rice subsidy program implemented nationwide by her previous government several years ago.

That forced the Supreme Court judges in charge of criminal lawsuits against politicians to put off the reading of the verdict until Sept. 27 in the likelihood of Yingluck's absence.

She had been accused by the National Anti-Corruption Commission of duty-negligence charges involving her alleged failure to call off the rice program which had been allegedly prone to corruption.

XINING , Aug. 8 (Xinhua) -- Artists from 13 countries have gathered in northwest China's Qinghai Province, as the 10th China International Folk Art Festival was kicked off in the provincial capital of Xining on Monday.

The event, scheduled to last till Aug. 13 , is jointly hosted by China Federation of Literary and Art Circles (CFLAC) and the Qinghai provincial government.

Shi Honggang, chair of Xining art theater, said the festival will not only broaden the horizons of the audience in Qinghai , but raise the profile of Qinghai's art.

David Mclaughlin, art director of Ireland Titanic dance theater company, said it is the first time for the company's original dance drama Titanic to be performed in China. The development of art is dependent on the inheritance , exchange and innovation of art lovers, he said.

Launched in 1990 with the approval of the State Council, the festival has been held triennially by CFLAC and a domestic city.

RIO DE JANEIRO, Sept. 22 (Xinhua) -- The Brazilian government announced on Tuesday comprehensive educational reform at the secondary school level, which was criticized by experts nationwide.

The government proposed that all subjects but Portuguese and mathematics become optional, while in the current school system all subjects are mandatory. Students would choose a track, for example natural sciences or human sciences, and study only the subjects in those tracks.

High schools would no longer be obligated to offer physical education and art. The change was considered especially preposterous in the country which has just hosted the Olympic and Paralympic Games, said the experts.

The plan to remove subjects that help critical thinking from the current mandatory curriculum, like history and sociology, was also criticized by experts.

Unpleased with the government's self-determined reform plan, teachers also complained on the Internet, accusing the government of trying to make Brazil's public education even worse by making schooling more technical and less comprehensive, and making students think less and repeat more.

BEIJING, April 1 (Xinhua) -- Rating agencies have overstated China's economic difficulties when lowering the outlook on its sovereign credit rating from stable to negative, an official said Friday.

"Standard & Poor's (S&P) and Moody's have overestimated the difficulties China is facing, while underestimating its ability to push forward reforms and cope with risks," said Vice Finance Minister Shi Yaobin.

S&P on Thursday said that China's sovereign credit rating had slipped to negative because excessive government spending and debt may curb growth. It did, however, maintain the rating at AA-, saying the government's reform agenda was on track albeit at a slower-than-expected pace.

Moody's made a similar decision earlier in March, based on expectations that China's fiscal strength would continue to decline, its forex reserve cuts, and uncertainty about economic reforms.
